Selfies might be last thing on your mind right now, and believe me. I hear you. These are challenging times.

But that is exactly why I’m sitting down today to write this for you. Yes, you.

Because these are challenging times. Both personally and globally, for so many.

It might seem like at a time like this that selfies are the least important thing and you might already be thinking “Why would I need a photography class, especially a selfie class right now”

But the thing is, I’m not talking about taking photos really.

I’m talking about you.

Witnessing yourself.

Being present with yourself.

Honouring your emotions as they emerge.

The practice of using the camera as a tool for self-witnessing, for self-compassion and for reconnecting yourself with the person looking back at you is deeply healing.

It is a tool that we need more than ever. Not to post on social media.

But to SEE ourselves.

To BE with ourselves.

In a time when they are trying to make us doubt ourselves.

Trying to make us numb. Disconnected from how we feel.

I believe that they are a tool that can let us honour our emotions, a tool that helps us not feel numb and reminds us of who we are and what we stand for.

This is about being our own beloved in action. For yourself. For community.

I’m not saying this class will solve any of the problems of our society. Far from it. But I am saying that you will leave this experience feeling reconnected to yourself, feeling supported by community and feeling anchored to what’s important to you.

This class is low pressure. With the regular Be Your Own Beloved class we set ourselves a challenge of doing a photo each day. In this class, I will encourage you to join in for the daily photo but there is a focus on self-care so if just getting your camera out and photographing the flowers starting to emerge outside your door feels more doable, that will be welcome too. The practice of making that space for yourself each day is the most important piece, the photo is secondary.

There will be no pressure in this class to:

  • Get a ‘perfect’ photo

  • Smile for the camera

  • Act like everything is okay

  • Show up as your ‘professional’ self

This will be a space to:

  • Engage in a practice of self-care

  • Be your own beloved in action

  • Be in supportive creative community

  • Make space for your creativity and it’s power

  • Reconnect with your emotions and your own voice through the lens

This class isn’t prescriptive. I’m not going to tell you what to do. Instead I’m going to ask you powerful questions around self-trust, self-care and introduce you to some practices of self-witnessing and how the lens can be an ally in rooting you back into yourself.

If this sounds like something you need in your life right now, come join us.

About Vivienne

I’m Vivienne, your guide in this online class. I created Be Your Own Beloved E-Courses after many years of using the camera as a tool to find my way back from a deep struggle with negative body image and self-hate. The camera has been an incredible self-care tool for me and continues to be and I'm excited to invite you to explore how it can support you too.

I hope you enjoy getting to know yourself through the lens and don't hesitate to reach out to me if you have any questions!

For those of you on the fence, trust me. Sign up. I’ve taken two courses with Vivienne and I’ll surely sign up for more. Vivienne is compassionate without being schmaltzy, creative without being flighty, and meets learners where they are. Her ability to create a community seems easy but as an online educator, I know how hard it is. Her classes are well worth the investment and they made me love the camera and myself.

FAQ

How does this class differ from the Be Your Own Beloved Class?

This class is completely different than the Be Your Own Beloved class and is more focused on self-care but of course, I created both classes so there will be similar themes and energies to some prompts.  I’d say this class is also more gentle and flexible in terms of what you take photos of each day.

Is this a self-portrait class?

This class is about self-care but yes, it is also a self-portrait class. That said, your perception of what ‘selfies’ are might not be the same thing I’m talking about. In this class we’re using the lens to connect to ourselves, not to take photos for social media. The camera can be an incredible tool for self-connection, witnessing our own lives and help us create rituals/practices of self-care in our lives.

Do I get feedback on my photos?

We have a community group where we will be sharing our photos throughout the class. I will be spending lots of time in the Community group exploring photos and I love to comment on photos and cheer you on! The feedback you will get throughout the course will be encouraging and as you’ll find, it becomes fun to cheer each other on in this adventure! You will definitely receive supportive feedback from me (as well as your peers) on all of your photos during the class.

It says the class is in Canadian Dollars (CAD) what is that in my currency?

Indeed, I’m Canadian, so the prices in Canadian currency but when you put the class into your cart, paypal will let you know what it will be in your currency before purchasing the class. You can check here to get a sense of what it would be though it may be a slightly different rate via paypal.

If you have any further questions about this don’t hesitate to click the contact form and connect with me!

Is this class just for women?

No, the class is welcome to all genders and all bodies. While cis women are usually the majority of participants, it is open to men, trans folk and those who identify outside of the gender binary. I use gender neutral pronouns in the class to welcome folks of all genders and to not assume the gender of anyone’s partner either. Safe space for all of us, including women, trans and non-binary folks, LGBT community and men dealing working through body acceptance is of the utmost importance to me. In every class I offer, I’m in awe of the diversity of backgrounds and life experiences we each bring to the group and the safe space we create together.
